The 25-year-old is said to have had a medical at United's Carrington training headquarters over the past few days and he is expected to cost $69.3 million from the Ukrainian giants.

United announced yesterday that they had agreed to sign Fred, or Frederico Rodrigues de Paula Santos to give him his full name, from Shakhtar Donetsk in a deal worth about £47 million.

While Fred is frequently compared to Manchester City's Fernandinho - due to his nationality, position and career path thus far - perhaps Tottenham's Mousa Dembele is a better, more accurate comparison.

Hopefully, Fred has a great World Cup and comes back in good form ahead of the Premier League season.

The midfielder Fred returns to the Seleção on Tuesday as a Manchester United player.

The Premier League campaign will kick off on Saturday, August 11.

While Shakhtar Donestk accepted the higher offer from United, Mourinho still had to convince Fred that he should choose Old Trafford.

Rivaldo, a World Cup victor in 2002, enjoyed a playing career that saw him represent clubs in Angola, Greece, Italy, Spain, and Uzbekistan as well as his native Brazil.

Defenders Rafael and Fabio scored eight goals between them during their time at the club, Rodrigo Possebon managed just eight first-team appearances while midfielder Andreas Pereira has spent the last two seasons on loan with clubs in Spain.

Fred is renowned as a box-to-box all-action central midfielder. The retirement of Michael Carrick has left a huge hole to fill in that department.

Handed his debut by Dunga in 2014, Fred's worldwide career was disrupted after testing positive for the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide during the 2015 Copa America.

Shakhtar fans, who are usually proud to see their players go onto bigger clubs, wish him well.

The Brazil squad, now preparing for Sunday's friendly against Austria at Tottenham's Enfield Centre, were quick to congratulate Fred on Tuesday after his move was confirmed.

United now miss that desire in their midfield, if not in the team hotel the night before games.
