Amazon Fire TV Cube blends new with old

The box will be priced at $120 when it launches and pre-orders will begin later today. As an introductory offer, Prime members can pre-order Fire TV Cube on June 7 and 8 for a special price of $89.99-a $30 savings. This will let the user control everything included but not limited to TV, cable boxes, soundbars, A/V receivers, etc.

And just a reminder, if you're thinking about buying the Fire TV Cube it's worth double checking that with an Amazon professional that it'll work with your current soundbar/speaker/receiver setup.

Fire TV Cube is the first hands-free streaming media player with Alexa, delivering an all-in-one entertainment experience. It's compatible with set-top boxes from companies including Comcast, Dish and DirecTV, covering more than 90 percent of households with cable or satellite subscriptions, according to the company.

This is actually an interesting device and it finally allows Amazon to compete with the various Android TV set-top boxes and smart TVs. That's far more than the $70 Fire TV 4K stick and still pricier than Amazon's basic $100 Echo speaker.

The Fire TV Cube is set to start shipping on June 21 with an IR extender cable, Ethernet adapter, and Alexa Voice Remote for $120.

"We believe voice makes it easier for customers to control their entertainment systems and watch the TV and movies they care about", said Marc Whitten, Vice President of Fire TV.

It can also show weather forecasts on the TV, order things from Amazon, make a phone call and control your smart home thermostat.

The Fire TV Cube is built nearly like an Echo, which means it includes eight far-field microphones so you can talk to it directly without needing a remote and it can hear you even over the sound of the television.

Amazon sees Alexa as a major part of its future.

Amazon Echo relies on Microsoft's Bing search engine and Wikipedia, while Google Home uses the company's own Google Search. Not surprisingly, Amazon is looking to sell you clothes and sell you fashion collections.

Do more with Alexa.

Although it's always listening, it's not always recording what you're saying.

'And, it's just the beginning. You can ask Alexa to turn on the TV, dim your lights, choose what to play without getting up from the couch or touching a remote.
