The death of 33-year-old Ines Zorreguieta was confirmed by Trudy Hulscher of the royal house's communications department.

The body of Zorreguieta was found on Wednesday evening at her apartment in Buenos Aires. She was only 33 years old.

Buenos Aires-born Maxima had a close relationship with her youngest sister, who was bridesmaid at her wedding to then Crown Prince Willem-Alexander in 2002.

Inés Zorreguieta reportedly died of apparent suicide at her home in Argentina.

She's also a godmother to Princess Ariane, now 11 - the third and youngest daughter of the Dutch royals. It is intensely sad and heartbreaking news that can hardly be comprehended by those who stay behind. The spokeswoman said the death was a "suspected suicide". She had previously suffered depression and was admitted to a psychiatric clinic in Buenos Aires in 2012, believed to have been suffering from anorexia and paranoia, the NOS added. "I wish them all the strength necessary to carry this frightful loss together and I trust that they will get the peace and space for that".

Nor will she accompany the king on the state visit to Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia next week, the state information service RVD told Dutch media.
