India and China on Saturday agreed on measures to build on the consensus achieved by their leaders during recent talks in Wuhan, including the next informal summit to be held in India in 2019 and steps to maintain peace along the disputed border.

Last week, Modi had said that Asia and the world will have a better future when India and China work together with trust and confidence while being sensitive to each other's interests.

Mr. Modi arrived in Qingdao in the afternoon on a two-day visit to attend the annual Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit.

The rice deal should help India finally crack the market in China, the world's biggest buyer of the commodity, traders said. Chinese President Xi Jinping has been seeking a bilateral meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, hoping to capitalize on Iranian estrangement from the G7 nations after U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal. It will be the first SCO summit since its expansion, when India and Pakistan were included as full members at the Astana summit in Kazakhstan a year ago.

The situation in the Indo-Pacific may figure in the talks but it is unlikely that the issue will find a mention in the SCO outcome document.

The summit comes after US President Trump controversially pulled Washington out of a 2015 worldwide pact with Iran that placed limits on its nuclear programme in return for easing economic sanctions. The sanctions have impacted Russia's defence cooperation with a number of countries including India.

About the SCO summit, officials said India will pitch for evolving effective ways to deal with the growing challenge of terrorism and enhancing security cooperation among SCO countries.
