Porsche Picks Taycan as Name for Its First Electric Vehicle

The oriental name also signifies the launch of the first electric sports auto with the soul of a Porsche.

Meaning "lively young horse", in a reference to the animal on the company's crest, the Taycan will become Porsche's first electric sports vehicle when it enters production next year.

Porsche has announced the production version of the Mission E electric vehicle concept will be called the Taycan. The Porsche Taycan electric sports auto can do a 0-100 kmph sprint in well under 3.5 seconds and to 200 kmph in under 12 seconds.

Of course, for an electric auto there's more than just speed to consider. Porsche is likely to follow its current strategy for gas and hybrid cars with is all-electric models, though, and offer varying degrees of performance under badges like "S" and "GTS" in the future. Other electric cars can't handle repeated hard acceleration because their batteries will overheat. Some of the spotted cars have been wearing exhaust exit surrounds that were fake and fitted to hide the car's identity. The car's top speed will be 155 miles an hour.

Ever since unveiling the concept, Porsche has been saying that the production version, which is expected to launch in 2019, will remain fairly similar. But the Taycan's floor-mounted batteries should give it an extremely low centre of gravity to allow for hunkered-down handling that's comparable with more focused performance machines. Porsche says a four minute charge will be good enough to deliver approximately 100 km (62 miles) of range.

Porsche is working with partners to create 500 fast charging stations at highway locations and at Porsche dealers around the United States. Finally, Porsche looked at Volkswagen's range of spare part numbers when naming the 911. As we've seen in the past, something that resonates positively with potential buyers can be enough to persuade a vehicle company not to go ahead with a rebranding at all. Prices are expected to start around $80,000 to $90,000.
