Like many others, Kardasian West had seen an online video about Johnson and concluded she was the victim of Draconian drug-sentencing laws. Kardashian West has been a fierce advocate for her sentence's commutation, funding lawyers and providing continual advocacy.

The unlikely duo first met in May to discuss commuting Johnson's life sentence. "Telling her for the first time and hearing her screams while crying together is a moment I will never forget", she said in the tweet.

"I always had hope she'd be released, but I didn't know that today when I woke up this morning today was the day", she said.

Johnson's daughter Catina Scales spoke with Business Insider earlier on Wednesday, as she was en route to pick her mother up from the Aliceville correctional facility in Alabama.

"We are optimistic about Ms. Johnson's future and hopeful that she - and so many like her - will get a second chance at life", Kardashian said after pleading Johnson's case to Trump.

Kardashian said the President shared the news that he granted Johnson's freedom in a phone call to the reality star. When West heard Johnson's story, she tweeted that she didn't find it fair.

The official said the Justice Department denied her petition because prosecutors maintain Johnson was involved in a drug cartel that was connected to violence and crime.

Citing Johnson's good behavior and rehabilitation, President Trump on Wednesday commuted her sentence a week after meeting with Kardashian. In a Twitter statement, Kardashian said, "I would like to thank President Trump for his time this afternoon". "What Kim Kardashian has done is used her connection with Trump to free a family member and score some PR points".

During the interview, the "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star admitted that being in the White House was downright awe-inspiring.

The White House said Alice Johnson had been a model prisoner and worked hard to rehabilitate herself.

Trump recently pardoned conservative commentator Dinesh D'Souza, who was convicted of a campaign finance violation.

According to the A.C.L.U, Alice Marie Johnson has been imprisoned since 1996 on charges of cocaine distribution, possession, money laundering, conspiracy to structuring a monetary transaction, part of a drug ring in Memphis over a period of years. "Kim just walks in, [and they decide] "OK, let her out", Bickmore said. "I was a little bit shocked because she was very calm, and I had assumed she knew", she told Van.
