But Russia was suspended from the group in 2014 after it annexed the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine.

Responding to Trump's call for Russia's return to G8, the Kremlin said that Moscow is focused on other negotiating formats.

On May 8, Trump announced Washington's withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal.

Founded in 2001, the Beijing-based SCO has largely served as a vehicle for resolving border issues, fighting terrorism and - more implicitly - to counter American influence in Central Asia following its invasion of Afghanistan.

Trump said in March that he and Putin would meet soon, but since then already poor ties between Washington and Moscow have deteriorated further over the conflict in Syria and the poisoning of a former Russian spy in Britain.

Despite this, Putin also said Sunday he's ready to meet with Trump, "as soon as the USA side is ready".

The comments come after Trump called for Russian Federation to be readmitted into the G-7 summit, a meeting of seven countries with major economies.

Rouhani also stressed the importance of developing bilateral cooperation in the fields of culture, science and technology and expressed hope that the Chinese government would facilitate issues for Iranian businessmen and students including in the banking sector.

"Russia should be in this meeting", Trump told reporters before leaving the White House South Lawn for Canada, where the summit is being held.

Speaking at an worldwide summit in the Chinese city of Qingdao on Sunday, Rouhani said the US' withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal poses a potential threat to the world.

The Russian prez said he did not discuss meeting venue but "many" countries including Austria are willing to help organise such a summit. I think it would be good the United States.

The Russian dictator can barely hide his glee, and he is moving to fill the opening that the president has created. The bloc includes China, Russia along with four ex-Soviet Central Asian nations, as well as India and Pakistan.

President Donald Trump announced last month that the United States was leaving the agreement, calling it deeply flawed, and reimposing sanctions that would hit global businesses working in the Islamic republic.

Speaking during a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Qingdao on Sunday, Putin emphasized that the bloc members are anxious about the USA move.

Trump has now exited three major treaties - the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the Paris climate accord and the Iran nuclear accord - and thrown into doubt the future of another - the North American Free Trade Agreement - while launching a reckless trade war against our closest allies.

Iranian President Hassan Rohani told a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), a regional security grouping led by China and Russian Federation where Iran has observer status, on June 10 that USA efforts "to impose its policies on others are expanding as a threat to all".
