Andrew Garfield has dedicated his Tony Award to the LGBT community.

The award speech for Best Musical at the end of the night even included some butchered Hebrew (it seems a producer was just trying to say "I love you" to his kids), and echoed the recurring themes of the evening of diversity and tolerance ("In the end we are far more alike than different.").

"After 9/11 it was very, very hard for me", Stachel said.

"We're getting messages from kids all over the Middle East thanking us and telling us how transformative our representation is for them".

"Angels in America" star Andrew Garfield attends the 72nd Annual Tony Awards on June 10, 2018 in New York City.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical: Katrina Lenk, "The Band's Visit". The not-quite Jewish co-hosts, Josh Groban and Sara Bareilles, were delightful, if aggressively wholesome. Glenda Jackson, 82, won best actress in a play for her fiery portrayal of an elderly woman in "Three Tall Women", and her co-star, Laurie Metcalf, won featured actress.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play: Nathan Lane, "Angels in America". The Special Tony Award will be given to John Leguizamo and Bruce Springsteen.

"At a moment in time where maybe the most important thing that we remember right now is the sanctity of the human spirit, it is the profound privilege of my life to play Prior Walter in "Angels in America" because he represents the purest spirit of humanity, and especially that of the LGBTQ community", Garfield said on receiving the reward. She later encouraged many of her pupils to lead the nationwide movement for gun reform. But later, students in her drama department surprised the audience by appearing onstage to sing "Seasons of Love" from the musical "Rent".

This story has been corrected to show that the official after-party was at the Plaza Hotel, not the Ritz Hotel.
