The dashcam footage shows Sgt. Anthony Mannino stop his patrol vehicle on the right side of a busy highway, just behind where the young boy is running.

Sgt. Anthony Mannino, a 24-year veteran of the Naperville, IL, Police Department, is being called a hero for his actions last month.

Cars continue to drive by in the left lane as the scene unfolds.

"The kid just got out of the house", Mannino later told CBS Chicago station WBBM-TV.

According to the Naperville Police Department, which posted the footage to its Facebook page Monday afternoon, the boy "escaped his mother's watchful eye".

"We attribute that to Sgt. Mannino's observation while on patrol and quick reaction, placing his squad auto and himself between the child and traffic", said the department on Facebook.

"I initially thought it was a dog at-large about to run into the street", Mannino said. On June 7, Sgt. Mannino was presented the department's Life Saving Award.

Mannino says the mother showed up moments later and "obviously was very emotional".
