Fox News host sorry for calling Trump, Kim Jong Un 'two dictators'

Trump earlier defended his decision to meet with Kim, tweeting that North Korea has already released three detainees and that missile tests have halted. During an impromptu conference about the G7 summit, Trump shared his optimism about the upcoming meeting with Kim.

Mr. Trump added of the regime's "concrete" steps: "They're going to start immediately".

Trump spoke only briefly in public on Monday, forecasting a "nice" outcome.

It was a striking about-face from less than a year ago, when Trump was threatening "fire and fury" against Kim, who in turn scorned the American president as a "mentally deranged USA dotard".

The president planned to stop in Guam and Hawaii on the way back to Washington.

It however did not give any details on how denuclearisation would be achieved.

"We're starting that process very quickly". "In light of how many flimsy agreements the United States has made in previous years, this President will ensure that no potential agreement will fail to adequately address the North Korean threat".

The agreement said the two countries would co-operate towards "new relations" while the U.S. would provide "security guarantees" to North Korea. Trump pointed to the worldwide partners that he plans to work with in the pursuit of a denuclearized North Korea, pointing to South Korea, Japan, and China as countries that he plans to work with moving forward. Trump cast that decision as a cost-saving measure, but also called the exercises "inappropriate" while talks continue.

It was unclear whether South Korea was aware of Trump's decision before he announced it publicly.

It's so far unclear whether the US and North Korea will release some kind of joint statement or agreement following the sit-down. The North Korean leader's sister and close confidante Kim Yo Jong was among the lunch party. Trump had said on Saturday he would know within a minute of meeting Kim whether he would reach a deal. On the day before the meeting, weeks of preparation appeared to pick up in pace, with USA and North Korean officials meeting throughout Monday at a Singapore hotel.

North Korea is believed to possess more than 50 nuclear warheads, with its atomic program spread across more than 100 sites constructed over decades to evade global inspections. "It was on the table from the beginning, and you see a total denuclearization of North Korea - so important". North Korea, however, has shown little appetite for surrendering nuclear weapons it considers vital to the survival of Kim's dynastic rule.

The optimistic summit was a remarkable change in dynamics from less than a year ago, when Mr Trump was threatening "fire and fury" against Mr Kim, who in turn scorned the American president as a "mentally deranged USA dotard".
