Pompeo says North Korea sanctions to remain until complete denuclearization

President Donald Trump met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore on Tuesday, but the historic meeting was just the first step toward diplomacy, according to some experts.

North Korea's official news agency on Wednesday quoted Kim as saying it is "urgent" that both North Korea and the United States "make a bold decision on halting irritating and hostile military actions against each other", while mentioning Trump's pledge to halt the military exercises.

Pompeo said during a news conference with foreign ministers Taro Kono of Japan and Kang Kyung-wha of South Korea that the agreement included those demands, even if they were not spelt out.

Following his talks with Japan and South Korea, Pompeo will head to Beijing to brief the Chinese government on Trump's meeting with Kim.

"When we refer to the mistakes of the past. And at the point that it's concluded they are not, the president's commitment to not have those joint exercises take place will no longer be in effect". That is not going to happen.

"Our deficit with China is still too high", said Pompeo, adding that it's "important for President Trump to rectify that situation so trade becomes more balanced, more reciprocal and more fair with opportunity to have American workers to be treated fairly".

Stephen Colbert had some questions for President Trump after Tuesday's summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un, so on Tuesday's Late Show, he stepped in for ABC's George Stephanopoulos. But the U.S. -North Korea joint declaration was vague on details, providing no clear definition on what constitutes denuclearization, set no timeline for the dismantlement process, and said nothing about outside verification requirements. The drills typically begin in March but were delayed until April this year to encourage North Korean participation in the Winter Olympics in the South.

Pompeo agreed, saying "We've seen power when China and the USA work together and don't treat the relationship as a zero sum".
