Golovkin vs. Alvarez II is set to go down on September 15. We had a deal in place to fight Billy Joe Saunders at the end of August, ' Loeffler told ESPN. The two will finally settle the score after a May date went off the rails.

They soon agreed to a return but that was shelved when Alvarez failed a doping test for Clenbuterol.

Alvarez served out his suspension and is nearly eligible to fight. Although most people think Golovkin should have been given the decision in their first matchup, the fact that slick boxers tend to win rematches over power punchers and that Golovkin gets further from his prime with every passing day, make this fight very intriguing. Instead, Nevada Athletic Commission officer Bob Bennett defended her.

This week, Golden Boy made the latest offer and gave Golovkin until noon Wednesday to accept. He ran through Vanes Martirosyan via second-round knockout. Clearly the only person here who doenst want the fight is GGG. What's more, Golovkin expressed hostility towards Canelo because he felt the man had cheated.

Shortly after the deadline passed, De La Hoya spoke to ESPN, offering a bit of posturing even though the deal apparently wasn't totally dead.

The September 15 clash should pick up right where their first bout left off. Alvarez will look to box, Golovkin will look to slug.

"We want the fight, [Golovkin's promoter] Tom Loeffler wants the fight".

That victory served as the 20th straight title defence for the Kazakh champion, whose record now stands at 38-0-1.

From that point forward, Golovkin had insisted on a hard 50-50 split or he would not sign up for the rematch. We bent over backwards. Nothing has ever been simple between the two fighters, but on Wednesday they appeared to clear the biggest hurdle for a rematch fight fans have been itching to see.
