Trump orders Pentagon to create US ‘Space Force’

That proposal was the brainchild of Reps. However, many opposed the plan and it didn't make it into the final version of the bill.

President George W. Bush in 2004 said humans would return to the moon by 2020.

Others thought the president had his priorities screwed up.

Of course, some in Congress, notably Rep. Mike Rogers, head of the HASC strategic forces subcommittee, and his ranking member, Rep. Jim Cooper, have pressed hard for a space force, arguing the Air Force's pilot-dominated culture pays insufficient attention space, to our peril. "We expect space to be a contested domain", Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson said in a Senate hearing last June.

U.S. Space Command, under the U.S. Air Force branch, has been in control of military space operations.

Trump says the United States will "be the leader by far" in space and looks to revive the nation's flagging space program.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joseph Dunford would manage the creation of "space force". He tweeted: "The president told a USA general to create a new Space Force as 6th branch of military today, which generals tell me they don't want". Among them is a provision that requires the deputy secretary of Defense to study the possibility of creating a space corps in the future. The Outer Space Treaty expressly prohibits establishing military bases or conducting military exercises on a celestial body as well.

Mr. Trump's wholehearted embrace of the concept, at the very least, is bound to rev up support for the new military branch and push the debate to the top of the legislative agenda over the Pentagon's direction.

Of course, no collection of memes about the new Space Force would be complete without Captain Picard. "I couldn't agree with (the president) more", he wrote in a tweet. "I believe it is premature at add additional organization and administrative tail to the department at a time I am trying to reduce overhead". It includes more than 36,000 personnel around the world that provide space and cyber capabilities for the Defense Department. Space has already been militarized - a Space Force would actually be primarily tasked with the defense of orbital defensive assets the US military has already long relied on for day to day operations.

Defense Secretary James "Mad Dog" Mattis has already voiced opposition to the creation of new branch of the military a year ago when the idea was first proposed by Congress.

Mattis argued that the Pentagon's priority should be focusing on getting its own shop in order before it goes about creating whole new branches.

The National Defense Authorization Act of 1947 created the Air Force.
