Senegal coach Aliou Cisse warned World Cup rivals that the West Africans had added tactical expertise to their enormous talent on Tuesday (Jun 19) after they opened their campaign with a convincing 2-1 win over Poland.

In the 37th minute, Senegal broke the deadlock as Idrissa Gueye's strike from the edge of the box took a heavy deflection off Cionek, sending goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny the wrong way.

Krychowiak would get one back with a header in the 86th minute but, as Nawalka would admit after the game, it was not almost enough on a bad day at the office for the European side. The Senegalese team shocked the world in 2002 by defeating then-reigning champions France in the opening match of group stage play and advancing to the knockout stage.

The Asian team overcame Colombia by the same score earlier in the day.

Robert Lewandowski is the latest star player to struggle at the tournament without the support of his high-quality club teammates.

This is Senegal's second appearance at the World Cup and it's the second time the team has come away with a monumental win.

He said they would bring the same focus to their next match against Japan on Sunday, when Poland will play Colombia.

Cisse said the whole of Africa was closely monitoring the progress of Senegal.

In fact, we let them score two goals.

While Grzegorz Krychowiak pulled a goal back for Poland in the closing minutes, they were unable to find a second to rescue a point.

"I'm satisfied with my players, really proud of them".

Mbaye Niang is buried in a green pile by Senegal teammates after scoring the African nation's second goal against Poland.

Speaking of Niang, he's now had one shot at a World Cup and used it to score his first ever worldwide goal.

All eyes will be on Poland hitman Robert Lewandowski, whose 16 World Cup qualifying goals topped Europe in the 2018 World Cup cycle.

A corner from Niang then reached Salif Sane, but he smashed his free header into the ground and over the bar.

A particular group of fans, painted S-E-N-E-G-A-L colors, were some of the best done-up we've seen so far at this world cup, by far.

As for Senegal, we think this GIF sums it all up quite nicely...

Poland kept huffing and puffing and they and Krychowiak gained some consolation when he planted a firm header past Ndiaye with four minutes to play.
