AMC Theatres unveils $20-a-month rival to MoviePass

That "sustainable" reference is a clear dig at MoviePass, an independent movie ticket subscription service that has been losing millions of dollars with monthly rates as low as $6.95 as it has built a subscriber base that recently passed the 3 million mark. The program kicks off next Tuesday, when members can enroll online and start using the service immediately. AMC's premium offerings including IMAX, Dolby Cinema, RealD, 3D, Prime and BigD will also be included in the subscription.

Stubs A-List costs more and is of course limited to AMC theaters, but AMC is taking direct aim at MoviePass with features like seeing multiple movies per day and repeat visits to a movie you've already seen.

MoviePass and AMC have feuded in the past over specifics regarding MoviePass access to AMC theaters and even went so far as to take some AMC theaters out of the MoviePass cache. The glaringly obvious advantages that MoviePass has over "Stubs A-List" are that it's half the cost and you can see movies at whatever theater you want. Shares of Helios and Matheson Analytics, the parent company of MoviePass, plunged more than 29%.

Helios and Matheson Analytics issued a warning about the company's ability to stay in business in a regulatory filing in April.

Theatres is launching its own $19.95-a-month movie viewing pass.

Meanwhile, outside of the three ticket per week allotment, the service also offers all of the existing benefits of an AMC Stubs Premiere membership.

"Thanks for making us look good AMC!", the MoviePass tweet read. "AMC has repeatedly disparaged our model as a way to discourage our growth because all along they wanted to launch their own, more expensive plan". "AMC Stubs A-List rewards guests with something that no one else offers: the very best of AMC, including IMAX, Dolby Cinema and RealD 3D up to 3 times per week, for one simple, sustainable price..."
