Japan-based football journalist Scott McIntyre told the BBC it was something that happens regularly at matches in Japan, and that it stems from habits drilled into people there from a young age. The St. Petersburg Stadium saw an attendance of over 64,460 spectators, which is the stadium's new record. Colombia went on to equalize in the 39th minute, before Japan scored a second-half victor.

The score of 2-0 remained flashing on the scoreboard for about two minutes as Russia's Artyom Dzyuba cannoned another ball past Elshenawy upping the score to 3-0.

Coming in the third minute, it was the second fastest red card in World Cup history and the first of this year's tournament. Seeing the famous Japanese fence known as the Samurai Blue Fans, it did not look ashamed at all.

First Japan, ranked 61st in the world, became the first Asian side to beat South American opposition at any World Cup, overcoming 16th-ranked Colombia 2-1.

Asian teams had managed three draws in 17 matches against South American sides, but the four-times Asian champions made their extra man count after Colombia midfielder Carlos Sanchez became the first player to get a red card in Russian Federation.

The results on the field gave both nations plenty of joy.

But in the end, Colombia held it together to secure a 1-1 draw against Peru.

"When you lose a critically important player three minutes into the game, it is tough", team's manager Jose Pekerman said.

The television viewer rating for the group-stage match stood at an average 42.8 percent for the first half and 48.7 percent for the second half in the Kanto region centered on Tokyo, according to ratings agency Video Research Ltd. Senegal's victory made them the only African team to win in the first round of matches.

Japan and Senegal face each other in a Group H match on Sunday, June 24.
