Over 50 vehicles set ablaze after oil tanker explodes

Many vehicles caught fire in the process. According to him, nine people were burnt beyond recognition while four others were rescued, with two in critical condition and two others with minor injuries.

"On getting to the scene of the incident it was discovered that a Mack tanker truck loaded with 33,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) moving inward Berger at about 5:23 pm, fell and spilled its content on the road resulting into fire outbreak", Mr Tiamiyu said in a statement to PREMIUM TIMES.

The president expressed his deepest condolences to the government and people of Lagos on the tragedy.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with them in this time and pain and grief".

Governor Ambode said though lives were lost to the unfortunate incident, but that he would take solace in the fact that more lives were saved, just as he admonished residents to always give access to emergency responders during such incidents.

While commending the people for their patience, the Governor assured that the State Government would continue to put measures in place to mitigate such incidents in future. The statement added that the state government was clearing damaged vehicles from the road. He called for the co-operation of all citizens with the officials of the agencies to restore the situation to normalcy.

Nine people have died after an oil-carrying tanker truck crashed and burst into flames on a bridge in Lagos, Nigerian officials said.

"We are removing the burnt vehicles from the road in order to ease traffic congestion".

According to Bisi Kazeem, spokesman of the FRSC, the cause of accident was break failure suffered by the petrol laden tanker.
