Bitcoin Was Russian Hackers' Currency of Choice, U.S. Says

Social networking site Twitter Inc. on Saturday suspended two accounts linked to 12 Russian spies indicted by Special Counsel Robert Mueller for interfering in the 2016 US presidential election.

Special counsel Robert Mueller filed the indictment at the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. The effort also included bogus Facebook ads and social media postings that prosecutors say were aimed at influencing public opinion and sowing discord on hot-button social issues.

The Russians involved belong to the military service GRU and are allegedly responsible for hacking the Democratic National Committee staffers emails, including those of chairwoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, Mrs. Clinton's campaign chair, John Podesta, and voting information on over 500,000 Americans. Stolen emails, many politically damaging for Clinton, appeared on WikiLeaks in the campaign's final stretch.

"The Justice Department, which was investigating Russian interference in the election - with the Federal Bureau of Investigation - before Mueller was appointed, certainly could have handled these cases", said McCarthy.

"When we confront foreign interference in American elections, it is important for us to avoid thinking politically as Republicans or Democrats and instead to think patriotically as Americans".

The indictment identifies the defendants as officers with Russia's Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff, also known as GRU.

These methods allowed them to access Hillary Clinton's election campaign and many computers at the DNC.

Stone said he believes the reference to that "U.S. person" in the indictment referred to him.

Mueller is investigating whether Trump's campaign colluded with Russian Federation and whether the president has unlawfully sought to obstruct the Russian Federation investigation.

He said there was no evidence that the hacking changed any vote count.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who announced the indictments, disappointed the Clinton camp by once again emphatically stating, "There is no allegation in this indictment that any American citizen committed a crime".

"There will always be adversaries who will seek to exacerbate our divisions and try to confuse, divide, and conquer us", he added.

One of the Russians probed election websites in Iowa, Florida and Georgia, looking for vulnerabilities just days before the November election, the indictment charged.

"I don't think it is me because I wasn't in regular contact with members of the Trump campaign", he said.

If the involvement of the GRU officers in the hacking effort is proved, it would shatter the Kremlin denials of the Russian state's involvement in the USA elections.

Longtime Donald Trump friend and adviser Roger Stone gave an interview to CNN that may have just pointed straight to Donald Trump in the Russian Federation investigation.

U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren - the Bay State's senior senator seen as a possible Democratic presidential candidate in 2020 - called on Trump in a tweet yesterday to get his "butt on a plane" back home and to call off the Finland summit.

Longtime Trump associate Roger Stone said he's likely the unnamed individual in the Justice Department's election hacking indictment who communicated with the persona "Guccifer 2.0".

He says the biggest question in his mind following the announcement of the indictments was whether Trump knew the announcement was coming.
