Modric scored 2 goals in Russia and was selected man of the match 3 times in the Russia World Cup.

As a child refugee Modric honed his skills in a cratered hotel auto park with nobody watching but on Sunday an estimated global audience of one billion will tune in to watch Croatia take on France in Moscow.

Luka Modric may have been one of the smallest players at the World Cup but he has made the biggest impression, being named best player of the tournament even though he lost the final with Croatia against France.

"We are very glad that Luka has won the Golden Ball, and deservedly so", said Dalic. The French defeated Croatia in the semifinals that year, which until now had been the country's best showing at the tournament.

The Besiktas defender has courted controversy in Russian Federation and was forced to apologise after speaking out in support of Russia's neighbour and adversary Ukraine following Croatia's quarter-final victory over the host nation. When the Real Madrid midfielder has the ball at feet, good things seem to happen for Croatia.

He scored two goals in the group stage and converted both of his attempts in penalty shootouts to help Croatia reach the final, collecting his award from Federation Internationale de Football Association president Gianni Infantino during a post-match ceremony in which he was embraced by Croatia president Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic.

He needed to collect the Golden Ball following Argentina's loss to Germany, the same fate which bestowed Modric. Not a single player in Russian Federation scored more, and you can't deny that. Belgium finished as the World Cup's highest-scoring team with 16 goals from 10 different players.
