Under secretary of defense defends Putin invite to DC

The top USA intelligence official is saying he meant no disrespect to President Trump in a televised interview discussing the summit with Vladimir Putin in Helsinki.

Ukraine has been at war for control of two of its eastern regions, Donetsk and Luhansk, after an uprising of pro-Russian separatists there in 2014.

Under such bitter criticism, Trump said a day later that he simply misspoke.

Dan Coats on July 21 issued a statement after US media reported Trump was angry with an interview the DNI gave at the Aspen Institute security forum in Colorado on July 19, when he laughed and at times appeared to mock the president.

Trump left the White House for his New Jersey golf club for the weekend.

Sen. Ben Sasse, a Nebraska Republican, called his comments "bizarre and flat-out wrong"; Arizona's Jeff Flake deemed them "shameful"; and Lindsey Graham of SC said they will be perceived as "a sign of weakness". If I was loud & vicious, I would have been criticized for being too tough.

Last Monday, President Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland, just three days after federal indictments were filed accusing 12 Russians of hacking Democratic Party emails in an effort to help Trump. The official did not specify if that meant Russia's interference in US elections. He said they discussed counterterrorism, Israel's security, nuclear proliferation, cyber attacks, trade, Ukraine, Middle East peace and North Korea.

One stop Putin nearly surely won't make is Capitol Hill.

She said Trump's "frightened fawning over Putin is an embarrassment and a grave threat to our democracy".

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday of the proposed Russian questioning, "That's not going to happen". "So, certainly as the leader of a country you would have to hold him responsible, yes", Trump said. He also defended his meeting with Putin, telling CNBC, "I think we could do great things for the world". "Those conversations are incredibly important".

"President Putin has visited the White House before".

A White House spokesperson, Lindsay Walters, wanted to make clear that the president "respects the independence of the Fed".

Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats told a security conference he's sure the ball "has been looked at very carefully".

"Getting along with President Putin, getting along with Russian Federation is a positive, not a negative", Trump said.

Trump's misplaced and unsafe equivocation (he should have firmly rejected Putin's preposterous request) led directly to the vote on Schumer's resolution, which was an unusual display of bipartisanship in these dramatically divided times. We are here to provide professional service to our government, ' he said.

This confrontation arose in light of Russian President Vladimir Putin's request to Trump to question a number of Americans over alleged (and illusory) wrongdoing. "There are many answers, some easy and some hard, to these problems...but they can ALL be solved!" But he said, "Russia was always open to such proposals".

Finally, as our week wound down, we learned (at the same time most of Trump's closest advisors did) that Trump had invited Putin to the White House this autumn.

If Trump is to retain control of his presidency, he will have to go with the public sentiment, which at this point is vastly against Putin and Russian Federation.

President Trump reportedly signalled to the Russian leader that it was an "incredible offer" and that he would consider it.
