A store manager is dead following a hostage situation involving an armed man who held dozens of people hostage inside a Trader Joe's in Los Angeles on Saturday. The grandmother was in critical condition. The suspect, who authorities said was "approximately" 28 years old, shot his grandmother seven times and another female victim, authorities said.

A gunman who led police on a pursuit and then ran into a Los Angeles supermarket, holding bystanders inside hostage, has been taken into custody.

- He ran into the Trader Joe's after crashing his grandmother's vehicle outside the store during a police pursuit, police said. All six, including a 12-year-old boy, are in fair condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

Erlier, he had crashed into a pole at the store.

"There is still an active police incident at the #TraderJoes near the intersection of Hyperion Ave and Griffith Park Blvd", the LAPD tweeted.

He then "fled the location in his grandmother's vehicle, taking the female victim with him", the Los Angeles police spokesman said.

That account was backed up by Christian Dunlop, an estate agent who lives nearby, who said he saw an employee drag an injured woman out by her hands. "I grabbed an emergency ladder, barricaded the hallway, grabbed a weapon, put the ladder out the window, and just tried to get the attention of a SWAT officer".

A suspect has been detained and several hostages have walked out of the store, safely escorted by police. "And (the police) returned some fire at him, but he ran straight in [to the Trader Joe's]". The suspect then went into the Trader Joe's, and police said a woman was shot in the front of the store. Once inside the supermarket, the suspect took customers and employees hostage "and held them against their will", said Moore.

Don Kohles, 91, was walking into the supermarket when he saw a auto being chased police crash into a pole just outside.

Police officers stand guard near a crashed vehicle outside a Trader Joe's store in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles on Saturday.

One woman was killed at the store amid the standoff, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said at a news conference after the arrest.

The gunfire shattered the glass doors, Kohles said, and the gunman ran inside and "down the middle aisle".

Other videos showed an employee dragging a person out of the store and employees escaping on a rope ladder outside a window.

US President Donald Trump tweeted that he was watching the situation "very closely".

"After he was inside the store for a little while they had me crawl away from the scene and run away around the corner", Field said.

He says the situation is still unfolding and it isn't clear if employees are still inside the store. It was unclear if she died from police gunfire or was killed by the gunman.
