Malcom, 21, looked destined for the Italian capital after both Roma and Bordeaux reached an agreement worth up to £32m for the Brazilian, but the transfer took an unexpected u-turn after Barcelona gazumped the Giallorossi's original offer.

Sporting director Monchi says Roma are "looking at (their) options" after seeing their move for the Brazilian hijacked by Barca at the eleventh hour.

The deal includes a further €1 million (A$1.6 million) in add-ons on top of the initial €41 million (A$64.5 million).

Malcom arrives at Barcelona with a burgeoning reputation of being one of the most promising wingers in football at the present moment. However, Spanish champions Barcelona swooped in with a better offer before he had boarded a plane for Italy.

Monchi also explained the club's premature tweet, claiming that a call from Bordeaux's president, as well as the French side's own tweet, prompted Roma to make the announcement via Twitter.

Reports have suggested that Barcelona see Malcom as an alternative to Willian. "At 11 p.m. we submitted a formal document with the offer Pallotta was willing to make".

"If someone wants to come to Roma that is great, but ultimately if they do not want to come to Rome then we do not want them".

Barcelona have now confirmed that they have won the race to sign the player for a fee of €42m (£37.34m) - subject to a medical - with Malcom committing his future to the Catalan giants until 2023.

Barcelona have already signed Clement Lenglet and Arthur this summer to add to their title winning squad from last season but have lost Paulinho and Andres Iniesta from their first team.
