During a telephonic conversation on Saturday, Lavrov and Pompeo exchanged views on the prospects for further normalizing relations between the two countries "on an equal and mutually beneficial basis", a statement said, Xinhua reported.

Mr Lavrov "stressed the unacceptability of the actions of the USA authorities who arrested Russian citizen Butina on the basis of fabricated charges, and the need for her early release", the ministry said about the call.

Lavrov and Pompeo also discussed developments in Syria, the denuclearization process in the Korean Peninsula, and agreements reached during the Helsinki summit.

Butina made worldwide headlines last week when the Justice Department announced her arrest and a grand jury formally approved charges of conspiracy and acting as a foreign agent.

Russian Federation has been steadily beating the drum on Butina's behalf.

More: Who is Maria Butina? On Thursday, the Russian foreign ministry announced a #FreeMariaButina campaign.

The charges against Butina came after she gained the attention of lawmakers investigating allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 election, and in April, she sat for eight hours of testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee. Butina's attorney, Robert Driscoll, said the packing boxes were in preparation for a move to South Dakota - not back to Russian Federation - where Driscoll said she meant to live with her boyfriend.

She was charged this week in Washington of acting illegally as an unregistered agent for the Russian government while she lived in Washington over the past three years with her boyfriend, a veteran Republican operative. They discussed a broad range of issues, some of which were following up from the meeting between President Trump and President Putin.
