The pair shared breaks in the third set, and as the clock ticked on later into the night, Murray eventually emerged victorious (7-4) in the final tie break - at 3:01 a.m. Ranked a career-high 32nd, he reached the fourth round last month at Wimbledon, becoming the first Greek player in the last 16 of a Grand Slam in the Open Era. On Monday, he didn't play his opening-round match until 10pm because of a five-hour rain delay. "Everytime I wake up from sleeping or napping I hope that it's better and it's quite demoralising when you get on the court it's not at the level you need it to be to compete at this level".

I don't think I should be put in a position like that.

Murray's match against Romanian Marius Copil did not finish until 03:00 local time on Friday morning and the three-time grand slam victor has also pulled out of the Rogers Cup as he eases himself back to full fitness following hip surgery in January.

An emotional Murray was in tears after the victory and said afterwards he thought it was "unreasonable" to ask a player to finish a match so late and then be expected to play again the following day.

Murray said: "Sadly, I won't be able to take my place in the draw in Toronto".

On Saturday, he'll face 19-year-old Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece. "It's a lovely thing to see", he said.

"That's something the tour needs to look at", Murray said.

"I do understand 3 very hard for everyone", O'Brien said.

Norrie won almost three-quarters of his first serve points as he dismissed the fourth seed and world number 25 to reach his second successive ATP Tour semi-final.

CLASH OF BROTHERSThird-ranked defending champion Alexander Zverev took bragging rights in his sibling rivalry, beating 15th-seeded older brother Mischa 6-3 7-5 in their first ATP meeting.

Top-seeded Zverev also eliminated 2015 Washington champion Nishikori at this event a year ago en route to the title.

Andy Murray later says he might not play his scheduled last-match quarter-final if he can not recovery sufficiently in time.

On the women's side, two-time Grand Slam victor Svetlana Kuznetsova was to face Kazak eighth seed Yulia Putintseva for a semi-final spot.

After his match against Copil, Murray may have seen enough for the time being.

"Not a whole lot, really, the emotions coming out at the end of an extremely long day and a long match", Murray said of what made him so emotional.
