Manchester United have opened talks with Bayern Munich over the potential signing of Jérôme Boateng, the £50 million-rated Germany centre back.

Jose Mourinho has pleaded with United chief Ed Woodward to bring in some new faces to Old Trafford before Thursday's deadline.

Real Madrid and Barcelona were seemingly at the front of the queue to sign Willian, but the 29-year-old's latest comments will only intensify rumours that a move to United is a strong possibility, with the player admitting that he is regularly in contact with Mourinho.

According to Metro, Ribery said: 'I've been playing with Jerome for many years now.

'I hope he'll stay with us because he's an important player.

"In the World Cup and recent seasons, I think he's been atrocious at times with his defending".

Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer also insisted that Boateng would be "missed" at Bayern and Alaba admitted he felt the same way.

"We'd all be sad", Alaba said. 'He's a world-class player, one of the best in his position'.

However, it's Manchester United who have stolen a march on their rivals as Jose Mourinho looks to reinforce his defence ahead of the season's curtain raiser this weekend.

'My CEO knows what I want and I still have a few days to wait and see what happens, ' Mourinho told MUTV before United's defeat to Bayern in pre-season.

"Or they are investing massively like Liverpool, that are buying everything and everybody".

It has been suggested that the Portuguese tactician is happy to part ways with Martial following his decision to leave United's pre-season tour of the U.S. to be with his partner for the birth of his son, Swan.
