Trump Administration Wants Space Force by 2020

"Our Administration will soon take action to implement these recommendations with the objective of establishing the United States Department of the Space Force by 2020", Pence added.

Trump said last week that he had ordered the Pentagon to begin the process of creating a Space Force as a new branch of the military.

Outlining the basic structure of the Space Force, US Vice-President Mike Pence and Defence Secretary James Mattis said space was vital to the country's national interests.

But nevermind how we're going to pay for this sixth USA military branch, or that the Air Force already covers celestial missions.

While these events may not represent a coherent plan by an adversary to militarize space, Pence argued that they represent a situation where USA adversaries like China and Russian Federation have already made space what he termed a warfighting domain.

"This is a dumb idea". The Air Force became the fifth branch of the USA armed forces in 1947. Space Force!' Colbert responded by saying: 'Yes, think of that. "We must have American dominance in space and so we will", Pence said in his speech.

The former official said the creation of a separate Space Force will create more red tape, not less.

It is not now clear the precise nature of the service - but it is thought to comprise a military force with fighting capabilities in space.

To further anger Trump, America became reliant on others up there in the space of space.

The new command would pull space experts from across the armed services, and there would be a separate acquisitions office, dedicated to buying satellites and developing new technology to help the military win wars in space.

"One giant leap in the right direction". A unified combatant command known as the U.S. Space Command would be formed by the end of 2018, according to a copy reviewed by Reuters. The first order of business, according to the Trump Make America Great Again Committee, is to pick a cool Space Force logo.

He hailed a new report by the Pentagon on the force as a starting point.

"Organizational changes don't fix all the problems".

However, before it gets off the ground - Space Force still needs Congress to pass new legislation.

"We are glad that the Pentagon is finally taking these steps in enhancing our space strength", Republican Rep. Mike Rogers of Alabama and Democratic Rep. Jim Cooper of Tennessee, the Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, said in a statement following the report's release. Bill Nelson of Florida tweeted on June 18.

The AFSPC has units at Air Force bases all over the United States.

Numerous proposed images evoke old-school space missions; one is a direct rip-off of NASA's famous "meatball" insignia, with white stars and a wan orbital path on a round field of red with a yellow vector.

Stationing or testing any weapons of mass destruction in space, including nuclear weapons, is banned by the United Nations' Outer Space Treaty of 1967. And the Space Development Agency would be tasked with developing new technologies for space security.

A war in space might also lead to something called a Kessler event. While this does allow a variety of conventional weapons in space, practical considerations should limit things like anti-satellite weapons, which have the potential to create debris fields that limit access to space by all nations.
