Trump considering revoking clearance for ex-Obama officials

Asked whether the administration would look into any security clearances for Obama himself or Vice President Joe Biden, Sanders said: "I'm not aware of any plans for that at this point".

Sanders would not say when the President would make this decision; she said only that the White House would provide updates when it had them.

"The security clearance has nothing to do with how I, or any of us feel about the president".

Brennan, Clapper, Hayden and Rice have all been critical of Trump's foreign policy, including the USA president's embrace of Russian President Vladimir at a summit in Helsinki.

Brennan last week described Trump's press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin as "nothing short of treasonous".

"The president is exploring the mechanisms to remove security clearance because they politicise and in some cases monetise their public service and security clearances", White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders told reporters.

Melissa Schwartz, a spokeswoman for McCabe, tweeted that his security clearance was deactivated when he was terminated, per Federal Bureau of Investigation policy.

"I think this is just a very, very petty thing to do", Clapper said.

"I just can't imagine that you want to go down that road", he said, adding: "If we start interjecting politics into this, our country's going to be significantly weakened".

"I've been trying my best to give the President the benefit of the doubt and always expressed potential other theories as to why he behaves as he does with respect to Russian Federation generally and Putin specifically", Clapper told CNN Thursday.

Hayden later tweeted that a revocation of his security clearance wouldn't "have any effect on what I say or write". Rand Paul of Kentucky tweeted that he was planning to raise the issue of revoking Brennan's clearance at a meeting with Trump.

More than 4 million Americans hold some security clearance and entire industries - supporting the Defense Department, the intelligence community, the nuclear energy infrastructure and more - are based hiring such employees to do contract work for the government.

Both the CIA and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which oversees all U.S. intelligence agencies, said they had no comment on Trump's threat.

The idea of moving to revoke Brennan's security clearance gained traction recently in conservative media circles.

Comey reportedly responded "nope", adding that he was "read out" when he left government and later declined a temporary clearance to read a classified version of the DOJ'S inspector general report.

She ticked off Mr. Clapper, Mr. Comey, former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, former National Security Adviser Susan Rice and former top intelligence official Michael Hayden as others who could face scrutiny.

Former CIA and NSA director Hayden objected to any White House suggestion that he had mishandled classified information or done anything that would be grounds for revoking his security clearance.

Some of targeted officials appeared to no longer have security clearances.
