Federer, Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray have all dealt with injuries that have forced them out of at least one Grand Slam since 2016, and Federer recently withdrew from last month's Rogers Cup, citing his schedule as the reason.

Serena Williams bounced back from the most lopsided loss of her career, cruising past Daria Gavrilova 6-1, 6-2 at the Western & Southern Open on Monday.

The defeat of the 47th-ranked German began his run for a possible eighth title at the tournament. "I did a lot of training, a lot of rehab", he said. So there is only so much you can really do. It's a good thing.

"The goal is now to recover from this match and take the positives". Nadal is guaranteed to take the top ranking into the U.S. Open.

The contest was the first for the Swiss since losing to Kevin Anderson in five sets in the Wimbledon quarter-finals on July 11.

She secured a second break in the sixth game when Williams sent a backhand down the line long, Kvitova eventually sealing the victory after a pulsating struggle when a backhand serve return attempt from the American sailed long.

Kyrgios, a finalist a year ago in Cincinnati, overcame physical problems to fight off the qualifier Denis Kudla for a 6-7 (2), 7-5, 7-6 (9) victory.

Alize Cornet of France sprung a first round surprise as she dispatched 11th seed Jeļena Ostapenko of Latvia 1-6, 7-5, 6-0.

The Australian Open semi-finalist Hyeon Chung won the last five games to beat Jack Sock 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Murray, returning from January hip surgery, was unable to get past the French 16th seed, hampering his preparations for the US Open starting on August 27.

And while Gojowczyk held his serve throughout the remainder of the second set, Federer did not put a foot wrong, holding to love to win it on his first match point.

"I'm very happy, especially with the way I fought until the end", he said. "Usually I feel like I play my better tennis at the beginning of the year so I'm going to try to flip it and play better at the end this year".

Konta had 10 double-faults and was broken four times by the 20-year-old, who will face big-serving ninth seed Karolina Pliskova.

"Obviously I've got an eye on Laver Cup".

The win was the first time Querrey has come out on top in a third set tiebreaker this year after losing seven in a row.

Peter Gojowczyk of Germany defeated Joao Sousa 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 and will next line up against seven-time victor Roger Federer, at second the highest seed in the field after the withdrawal of Rafael Nadal.
