Madonna Responds to Aretha Franklin Tribute Backlash

Toward the end of the ceremony, Madonna-who was presenting the video of the year award-took the stage to tell the crowd how Franklin's music helped launch her career.

Madonna appeared at the VMAs on Monday to present the award for video of the year and honor Franklin, who died last week after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Far more accused her of making the show's only tribute to Franklin all about herself. She spoke at length about her own start in the business and her own career before thanking Franklin for "empowering all of us".

"So, you are probably all wondering why I am telling you this story", she said. That would be impossible in 2 minutes with all the noise and tinsel of an award show.

"She led me to where I am today and I know she influenced so many people in this room tonight".

Whether or not Madonna's speech was meant to serve as a Franklin tribute is beside the point - the Queen of Soul certainly deserved more from the VMAs than a cameo in Madonna's story.

Madonna is yet to respond to the fierce backlash against her Aretha Franklin tribute.

Madonna's speech about the Queen of Soul has been widely criticized because it focused on herself with just a bare mention of Franklin.

The act introduced Tuesday also recognizes Franklin's philanthropic work to promote civil rights and health and gender equality, and adds that her talents "instilled hope, uplifted generations, and changed the lives of millions of people across the globe". It was a truly freakish trainwreck to watch, and Twitter isn't letting Madonna get away with the lack of R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

"I could see that they didn't take me seriously, and why should they?" she continued.

Madonna, the queen of questionable tributes?

Madonna talked about how, before she was famous, she auditioned to dance for "a French disco sensation".

Critics thought the tangential speech an undeserving tribute to the Queen of Soul. "Very disappointing", one user wrote.

A few of the star's die-hard fans managed to shine a ray of light on the situation, though, including one who called the tribute a "Great speech!" I Love Camila! I love my dress! AND.
