Forecasters have issued a hurricane warning for Hawaii island (also known as Big Island) and a hurricane watch for Oahu, Maui and other smaller islands that make up the archipelago.

Lane is only the second category 5 hurricane on record to pass within 560km of Hawaii, according to the NWS.

A hurricane warning in effect for Hawaii's Big Island has now been extended to the island of Maui as residents rush to stores to stock up on supplies as the potentially catastrophic storm churns towards the state.

Rainfall of 20in (51cm) in some areas could lead to major flash flooding, landslides and mudslides, the NHC said.

Additional Tropical Storm or Hurricane Watches and Warnings will likely be issued for other Hawaiian Islands.

As of 5am local time (4pm BST) on Tuesday, Hurricane Lane had reached 315 miles (505km) south of Kailua-Kona - it is now located between 18 and 36 hours away.

"I ask that we all prepare for the worst and hope for the best", Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim said Tuesday evening.

The state is bracing for a powerful punch: The governor has declared an emergency, and all public schools on the Big Island and Maui are closed.

10 to 15 inches of rain, with isolated amounts greater than 20 inches is expected over the Hawaiian Islands starting Wednesday night.

The Category 4 hurricane is moving west-northwest at 9 miles per hour, the weather service said.

As Hurricane Lane takes a sharp turn north toward the islands Wednesday - and moves into cooler Pacific water - it is expected to weaken significantly, going from Category 5 to possibly Category 1 by Friday.

Hurricane Lane is hurtling toward Hawaii. "I've not seen such dramatic changes in the forecast track as I've seen with this storm". It caused approximately $3 billion in damage, with extreme winds completely destroying more than 1,400 homes and damaging almost 13,000 more.

Hurricane Lane could bring rainfalls of close to half a metre.

While Lane's strength is expected to weaken slightly upon its approach to the Hawaiian islands, it was still expected to remain a risky hurricane.

Tornadoes and large waterspouts will be possible due to Lane, mainly along and to the right of the track of the hurricane, the weather service said.

The Hurricane Center urged residents of Hawaii to prepare for the storm.

In the tweet, he mentioned the Category 4 storm was near the islands and added the crew of the International Space Station sends "much aloha to everyone there".
