Third case of West Nile confirmed in Panama City Beach

Maragos said West Nile positive mosquito tests statewide increased from 1,498 to 1,984; human cases increased statewide from two to five; and the number of Ohio's 88 counties with West Nile reported in them increased from 44 to 52.

So far in IN there have been two confirmed cases of West Nile virus disease in humans, in Hamilton and Vanderburgh counties.

This year's first case comes more than a month earlier than the first case of 2017, but Vélez de Brown said it's not necessarily a harbinger of an especially active season.

The hot and muggy weather is creating optimal breeding conditions for mosquitoes.

The Environmental Protection Ministry warned residents to protect themselves against insect bites and called on the local authorities to spray insecticide in areas where there are large numbers of mosquitoes or larvae. Use a repellent with DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide), permethrin, picaridin (KBR 3023), IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus [p-methane 3, 8-diol (PMD)] according to the instructions on the product label. Wear long-sleeved shirts and long trousers.

Keep mosquitoes out of your home. Empty any unused flowerpots and wading pools, and change the water in birdbaths frequently. The Health Ministry was criticized Wednesday of failing to report the case, which was revealed by the Kan public broadcaster.
