Cohen has also been subpoenaed by investigators to provide information about the Trump Foundation, which is the subject of a NY attorney general's office inquiry.

Cohen pleaded guilty last week to campaign finance violations, bank and tax fraud.

Underwood's request was first reported by The New York Times.

The Trump Organization recorded the reimbursement as a legal expense.

But early one April morning, more than three dozen federal agents raided Cohen's home, office and hotel room.

The objective of the visit, Steele wrote, was to pay hackers to obtain dirt on former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the Democratic Party presidential nominee in 2016.

"I think [Trump] has constitutional defenses to the investigation being conducted by Mueller", into Russian interference in the 2016 election, said Dershowitz, who is author of the book, "The Case Against Impeaching Trump".

This is why the news that Manhattan district attorney Cyrus Vance is considering pursuing charges against the Trump Organization may be such a significant development. But it is unclear whether the man they worked for, the president, will face any formal scrutiny or consequences.

Prosecutors have also granted immunity to David Pecker, a longtime Trump ally and chief executive of a tabloid publishing company, to describe his company's role in suppressing stories about the alleged affairs, according to a person with knowledge of the inquiry.

In April, he denied he knew anything about the Daniels payment but he told Fox News in an interview aired on Thursday that he knew about payments "later on".

There's one major problem with Trump's plan, though (other than the abject corruption and potential for constitutional crisis, that is): Presidential pardons do not cover state-level charges.

On the recording, Cohen and Trump appeared to discuss reimbursing American Media for a payment to former Playboy model Karen McDougal, who has said she had a yearlong affair with Trump.

Such payments could be considered illegal campaign contributions under federal election law.

The Trump Organization paid Cohen in $35,000 installments through 2017, and submitted false invoices for the payments which it said were part of a monthly retainer.

Davis has strongly telegraphed that Cohen is willing to cooperate with Mueller's investigation.

As writer Craig Unger told MSNBC's Chris Matthews, the connection between Trump and the Russian mob was forged by the president's old lawyer, the late Roy Cohn. The money covered the $130,000 payment to Daniels plus costs and fees, a bonus for Cohen, and money to cover his tax liability.

Cohen knows where all the bodies are buried, Weisselberg knows where all the money is hidden, and Pecker has all the stories and tapes documenting Trump's numerous affairs locked in his safe.

"It means that Individual-1 needs a real lawyer", he said.
