The source said the Paris public prosecutor's office had opened a preliminary inquiry into allegations against Depardieu following a complaint lodged on Monday. A lawyer for Depardieu told AFP that the actor "absolutely denies any attack, any rape".

Aside from French films and TV-shows, Depardieu has starred in a number of Hollywood films including Kenneth Branagh's "Hamlet" and alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Jeremy Irons in "The Man in the Iron Mask". Her agent said she was left "devastated" by the attack.

Temime added that Depardieu is "shaken" by the allegations, which are against "everything he is and respects".

The unidentified female says that the 69-year-old French actor sexually assaulted and raped her this past month at his home in Paris, France.

This is a huge scandal considering Gerard Depardieu is one of the most well-known actors in France and is also highly-acclaimed internationally.

The young woman was studying at a school where Depardieu is teaching, according to BFM. "He will cooperate in the investigation and will answer questions", Herve Temime told BFM television. It accused the actor of sexual abuse on two occasions, August 6 and August 13, Le Parisien reported. In 1990, he received his first Academy Award nomination for Cyrano de Bergerac and was awarded a Golden Globe for Green Card.

Off-screen, he made headlines in recent years for attacking French tax laws, moving to Belgium in protest and later developing close ties to Vladimir Putin's Russian Federation.
