A male suspect has been injured after a sheriff's deputy shot him when he opened fire in a mid-race shooting at Del Mar track in California.

Video provided by Fox San Diego showed deputies struggling with a man in a white shirt on the ground.

The man was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, the department said.

Following the incident, the Ice Cube concert went on as planned, and Del Mar's final day of racing was expected to continue Monday at 2 p.m.

The man, whose name and age weren't given, came to the ticket window at the Del Mar Fairgrounds about 6:40 p.m., the department said in a news release.

"An argument ensued", the sheriff said in a statement.

The sold-out show, drawing about 18,000 people, was part of the 2018 Del Mar Summer Concert Series. The man pulled out a silver plated semi-automatic handgun and fired several shots into a crowded area.

Authorities said a man fired his gun near the race track and a deputy returned fire.

The man who was shot was taken to a nearby hospital, but his condition is unknown, the newspaper reported. Passing concert-goers can be heard shouting expletives after the shooting.

No other details were immediately known. TVG documented the shooting while calling a race with a broadcaster repeatedly saying: "There is gunfire at the track".

A witness said some concertgoers appeared to leave the arena in the aftermath of the shooting incident.

As is our special events protocol, substantial law enforcement and private security was on site in anticipation of the event.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
