Derek Carr: Raiders Over Shock Of Khalil Mack Trade

It's finally here. After seven long months without real football, the 2018 NFL season is upon us.

On the Hoge and Jahs podcast, you can hear the entirety of the Ryan Pace press conference that features Matt Nagy and Khalil Mack.

The Buccaneers were the only team of the eight acquiring that top talent to win a Super Bowl with that player. When it came down to it, Mack and the Raiders weren't seeing eye to eye.

While Carr will continue leading the Silver and Black through this season and many others, it admits it'll be unusual to carry on without Mack. But we have him if we need him. "We all will miss him, but we will all move on". It wasn't a prediction, just a goal, but some took it the wrong way.

"It isn't what anybody wanted - I think that's clear", Carr said (via ESPN). "We did change the dynamic of how things are done from the people in the locker room". We wanted to make this a place that free agents wanted to come. I think we did that. It was our whole class.

"And I feel like we did that", Carr said. That's the only thing left on our list that won't happen.

"Our right tackle, (on Mack's) second play, turned around and gave me the eyes when he rushed him", Nagy said.

Jon Gruden is back in the National Football League, baby, and he's off to some kind of start. Not bad for a seventh-round pick.

Carr signed a five-year, $125 million deal last summer. Ellis got an affordable $15 million deal this offseason.

If Mack keeps up at this pace, he's a Hall of Famer. McKenzie's plan went off the rails. So you've got to field a 53-man roster and there are some implications of having two players making that much money.

"That's what makes it hard", Carr said. The Jets made an offer, but it did not include multiple first-rounders, per SNY's Ralph Vacchiano. "Honestly, it hurts because we did, we tried, and we were always open".

And before that preparation began in earnest, Carr made sure to speak with his teammates in the aftermath the aftermath trade. Obviously Mack is a better linebacker than Dalton and Flacco are quarterbacks - the 27-year-old is arguably the second best defensive player behind Aaron Donald - but like those two mediocre signal-callers, he is not capable of carrying a unit to competence without a lot of help, like true franchise quarterbacks are. What we're hoping with James is that we as coaches can get him to the point where he can just continue to grow each and every day in his technique. "We all saw it coming".

"It didn't go away, because he's your buddy, but at the same time it went away because we have a game to get ready for".

"It was very hard for us. but it was also like a bittersweet moment for us", Ellis said. He got what he wanted.

"But it is what it is - it's part of the business", Carr added.
