If Samsung shows off its foldable phone this year, it may encourage some potential iPhone buyers to hold off.

Samsung Mobile chief DJ Koh talked to CNBC about the imminent foldable phone, revealing the handset may be announced as soon as November, at the company's developer conference. But unless you're in dire need of an upgrade, the smart move is to wait for what the next iPhone, Pixel and even Galaxy S10 bring.

Koh said to CNBC, "it's time to deliver" on a foldable device. However, Koh said that while development has been complicated the process has nearly concluded.

Samsung is reportedly changing its approach in terms of releasing new features for its smartphone division. For example, it has released the results of several consumer surveys that suggest that there is consumer appetite for one.

The premium smartphone market drives much of the profit at Apple and Samsung, which have both raised the prices of their phones over the past year. He also hinted that the "unfolded" mode will provide benefits that go beyond having a tablet-sized screen, but didn't elaborate on what these benefits might be.

While we still don't have any word on the full-scale launch or the pricing of the device, we at least now know that such a device exists.

He added that Samsung has attempted to make "every device, every feature, every innovation" meaningful to Samsung users - which, admittedly, doesn't tell us anything illuminating, really.

It was two Chinese companies that unveiled pioneering triple-lens and 3D-sensing rear phone cameras with Huawei's P20 Pro, and the Oppo R17 Pro, respectively, but next year all major phone manufacturers will follow suit. Samsung doesn't want the phone to become a tablet and has devised a unique experience for it. The device allegedly has a 7.3-inch foldable display panel.

The document shows a narrow Samsung device with a screen that bends and folds like an old-school flip phone handset, with a large hinge.
