Gordon Weakens Over Central Mississippi, Florence Becomes Major Hurricane

Meteorologist John Moore at the National Weather Service in Jackson, Miss., said Gordon's impact on MS was less than initially expected because the heaviest of the storm's rainfall had shifted eastward. This rainfall will cause flash flooding across portions of these areas.

As of 5 p.m., the storm had maximum sustained winds of 70 mph — with higher gusts — and was located about 95 miles south-southeast of Mobile, Ala., and about 90 miles southeast of Beloxi, Miss.

"Given a tropical cyclone's strongest winds are usually are on its eastern side, that's why the NHC issued a hurricane warning for parts of the MS and Alabama coasts", The Weather Channel reports.

The center predicted total rain amounts of 4-8 inches in the Florida panhandle and parts of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa and IL.

If this happens, hurricane warnings and storm surge amounts may be shifted based on the new forecast track.

Beaches around Mobile, Alabama were being washed by storm-driven waves on Tuesday morning, said Stephen Miller, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell held an afternoon news conference and said the city has "the pumps and the power" needed to protect residents.

It took place in Escambia County, near the city of Pensacola. By Wednesday afternoon the numbers were down to about 5,800 in Alabama, 3,000 in MS and a little more than 2,000 in Florida. Crews were already restoring electricity early Wednesday in the wake of the storm. Beachgoers in the area were being warned Wednesday that it's too early to return to the water; unsafe rip currents prompted red-flag warnings, meaning it's illegal to enter the Gulf of Mexico.

Sea levels could rise as much as 1.5 metres from Shell Beach, Louisiana, to Dauphin Island, Alabama, forecasters said.

Mayor Jeff Collier had warned ahead of the storm that his community might get cut off.

Sustained winds were at 70 miles per hour (113 kph), just below hurricane-force. MS shut down a dozen Gulf Coast casinos.

BSEE also reported an estimated 9.4% of current oil production, about 159,085 barrels per day, and 10.4% of natural gas production, 266 million cubic feet per day, in the Gulf of Mexico had been shut-in.

Modeled estimates include losses to residential, commercial, and industrial properties as well as automobiles, the company said in a statement.

FRIDAY-TUESDAY: As Gordon fades away to our northwest, our weather remains in a wetter pattern, with scattered showers and storms sticking in the forecast through the end of this week into the start of next week. Hurricane Florence was some 3,900 kilometres away from the usa, and lining up behind it, another potential storm was likely to form not far off the coast of Africa.

As Gordon slowly fizzles out, forecasters are turning their attention to Hurricane Florence, which is some 2,400 miles away from the USA, and another potential storm near the coast of Africa.
