Still ahead is a final round at soggy Aronimink Golf Club that could take more than one day to complete because of rain in the forecast, along with 13 players within five shots of the lead.

"I'm sort of in a position where I feel like a win is the only way I'd even be in consideration", Schauffele said.

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy broke new ground when they tied for the first-round lead at the BMW Championship in Pennsylvania on Thursday.

Woods had ignited thoughts of his career first 59 after an outward nine that produced a seventh hole eagle and four birdies in a six-under par 29.

Hideki Matsuyama, who started the FedExCup Playoffs at No. 76, had a 64 and was in a group three shots behind that included Keegan Bradley, Alex Noren and Rickie Fowler.

Jordan Spieth was projected to fall just outside the top 30 in the FedEx Cup, which would mean missing the Tour Championship and getting some form of penalty from the PGA Tour because of his schedule.

It was the 17th time Woods had a 54-hole score of 198 or lower.

Nothing less than victory at the BMW Championship this week will give Xander Schauffele a chance of forcing his way onto the American team for this month's Ryder Cup, the former frontrunner for a captain's pick has said. Woods last won the tournament in 2009.

Now that the 2018 BMW Championship field is locked, SportsLine simulated the event 10,000 times and the results were surprising. "I know this putter", Woods told Golf Channel.

Schauffele also needs a good week to get to Tour Championships at East Lake, and his goal would be to extend his season an additional week in France at the Ryder Cup. Following a 308-yard drive down the left side at the 444-yard par-4, he hit a solid approach to just under 20 feet and drained the birdie putt to get to 1-under for the day.

Schauffele started the day two shots off the lead and quickly made up ground. "But they didn't go in today".

"I just didn't hole as many putts".

Through all the sweat, through all the birdies, they managed to give Philadelphia fans a reason to cheer for golf in the hours before the Super Bowl champion Eagles opened the National Football League season Thursday night against Atlanta. "But, yeah, it's definitely something that I want to keep going", added the golfer.
