Manchester United and England defender Luke Shaw was stretchered off 54 minutes into the UEFA Nations League match against Spain on Saturday with what the English FA has called a concussion.

The Three Lions' UEFA Nations League opener got off to the best start when Marcus Rashford put England ahead in the early stages of an entertaining contest.

England coach Gareth Southgate said it was "difficult to tell" if Shaw was knocked unconscious at Wembley Stadium, but added that the left back would continue to be assessed by medics overnight.

Following a disappointing World Cup campaign, Luis Enrique was appointed to take the reins at the Spanish national team.

Against England, Spain had far less possession than they were used to under World Cup caretaker coach Fernando Hierro and predecessors Julen Lopetegui and Vicente del Bosque but played with more objective and were more direct than before.

"I have seen teams fold in that sort of situation but we finished really strongly, created a couple of very good chances", Southgate said.

"Normally the first thoughts are happy memories, goals and wins, but then obviously you go on to think what could have been".

In their first outing since reaching the World Cup semi-final, Marcus Rashford fired them in front when he tapped home from Luke Shaw's pinpoint pass in the 11th minute.

The left back, whose remarkable comeback from serious injury has been well documented recently, was felled after a collision with Dani Carvajal and was treated for around seven minutes on the pitch, before being taken off on a stretcher. "I am a fighter, so I will be back soon".

Early in that game, which Real Madrid won 3-1, he clashed with Mohammed Salah in an incident that saw the Egypt worldwide sustain a shoulder injury that forced him off prematurely and saw his participation in the World Cup limited.
