Nadal on epic US Open match: 'I suffered, that's the right word'

"Had been a very tough start for me".

And while the brutal straight sets thrashing at Roland Garros would've hurt, there was a belief this defeat, especially after his flawless first set, would've stung even more. "Tough match against a great opponent".

"The conditions have been tough out there, too". He played a good match. Sorry for him. He's a top guy. "I don't know if I can get a new one, but I'm doing all my best to try to get it again".

"Whatever the humidity is on outer courts or in the city, I think it's amplified on centre court", Isner said. "I hope that we have many more in the future - with a different end".

"I'm happy, of course, to be in semi-finals again means a lot to me. I'm playing a lot of hours this year at this lovely stadium". The fourth was a wild 81-minute ride that began with Thiem facing break points, saw the Austrian threaten a double break before being pegged back and then a tired Nadal miss a chance to win the match.

Nadal leads 11-5, including the past three, each at a Grand Slam tournament: in the semifinals of the U.S. Open last year, followed by the semifinals of the French Open and a five-set thriller in the Wimbledon quarterfinals this year.

Marin Cilic and Kei Nishikori face each other in a rematch of the 2014 final while, in the remaining women's quarter-finals, Madison Keys takes on Carla Suarez Navarro and Naomi Osaka meets Lesia Tsurenko. But after Nadal came within two points of victory, Thiem wound up taking the fourth set 7-6 (4).

"Thank you very much everybody for staying here tonight", Nadal said after the four hour, 49 minute marathon.

"It's going to be stuck in my mind", he said.

"I would say the first really epic match I played". It was question of little bit of luck at the end, and was for me. "Forever I'm going to remember this match, for sure".

When it ended, on an overhead by Thiem that sailed long, everyone in Nadal's guest box - a group that included actor Ben Stiller - leaped to their feet to celebrate.

"I just said "I am very sorry". He's a great guy. I don't want to lose against anybody.

A 10-minute break will be allowed between the second and third sets of women's singles matches if either player requests one. "That's one more today", he said after his 0-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-7 (4/7), 7-6 (7/5) win.

The defending champion was a break down at 5-4 but fought back to move two sets to one up and, though he was unable to close the match out in the fourth, he did so in the fifth-set tie-break, setting up an enticing encounter with Juan Martin del Potro in the semi-finals.

The popular third seed will now attempt to take a step he has not managed since winning his only grand slam title here nine years ago and reach another final. I have never seen Roger sweat ever.
