First image of Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker

Now director Todd Phillips has shared a new vid, possibly a makeup test, in which we at least get to see the Batman villain in his clown getup.

The first images we saw of Joaquin Phoenix as The Joker in the upcoming film were underwhelming to say the least. "Joker", Phillips captioned the teaser.

So, what do you make of that look? The song from "The Guess Who" is a cool way to convey that the film will be a period piece, and Phoenix looks quite unhinged both pre and post-transformation. Phillips' exploration of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale. Flashes of a clownish face are overlaid on top of Phoenix's countenance, until we finally arrive at the climactic close-up of Phoenix with long hair, a painted red mouth and eyebrows to match his burgundy coat, and a smile that suddenly gives way to a stern expression and gaze that's unbelievably unsettling.

We've gotten a peek at what Joaquin Phoenix will look like as "Arthur", who we know will turn into the Joker in his own origin movie.

Co-stars include Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.
