The hearing on Thursday for the 53-year-old Death Row Records co-founder comes nearly four years after Knight killed one man and injured another with his truck outside a Compton burger stand.

Knight, 53, had previously plead no contest to voluntary manslaughter charges on September 20 in Los Angeles County Superior Court as part of a deal which saw prosecutors drop murder charges against him.

A judge gave the Death Row Records co-founder a 28-year prison sentence.

The prison sentence represents the low point of a long decline for Knight, one of the most important figures in the history of hip-hop.

One of the victims, 55-year-old Terry Carter, later died of his injuries.

"He murdered my dad in cold blood and is a menace to society", Crystal Carter said in court, according to The New York Daily News.

Knight released two photos with an aged Tupac hanging out with rapper 50 Cent and a photo with Pac with Beyoncé.

Knight, who was out on bail in a robbery case at the time, fled the scene but was later arrested.

Tupac was shot and killed at the peak of his popularity in Las Vegas, Nevada during a drive-by shooting in 1996.

The fatal confrontation, which was captured on dramatic surveillance video, occurred near a filming set for a promotional video for the movie "Straight Outta Compton".

In January, 2015, Knight had been fighting with a longtime rival, Cle "Bone" Sloan, through the window of his pickup truck outside the burger stand near where promotional filming was being done for the N.W.A. biopic "Straight Outta Compton". The onetime college football star and "gangsta" rap pioneer eventually lost control of his label in bankruptcy proceedings. Knight's lawyers have said it was an act of self-defence.

That doubled the manslaughter sentence and adds an extra six years.

Two other criminal cases that Suge was facing were dismissed at sentencing.
