MARK HEINZE: There are some pretty major problems in the dairy industry and in agriculture in general right now.

"Looking north, dairy trade with Canada was one of the most hard and contentious negotiating issues to solve in the entire USMCA deal", said Ryan.

Officials with automotive producers in both Canada and the US were pleased with the deal. The 3.5-per-cent allowance is the same as was granted during European trade negotiations, the Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (CETA).

While Nelson said this agreement won't solve all the problems plaguing the dairy industry, it's a start.

The US government has long accused China of stealing American intellectual property through cyber espionage and other means, a charge that has ramped up since President Donald Trump took office promising to take on the Chinese government. But he says fixing trade with Canada won't really help make his financial situation better.

Since NAFTA began, Washington's exports into Mexico and Canada have increased 700 and 200 percent, respectively.

Pence also criticized what he said was China's theft of USA technology and urged Google to immediately end development of its "Dragonfly" app that would make it easier to track someone's internet searches.

While China does maintain global efforts to influence overseas Chinese and has been accused of several high-profile cyber raids on American computer systems, there has so far been no public evidence of the sort of influence operations the USA has said Russian Federation carried out in 2016. The Trump administration set a September 30 deadline for Canada to join the agreement, or tariffs would be placed on vehicles exported to the U.S.

"We're anxious whenever the efficiencies of our livelihood, you know like we're 10 per cent smaller suddenly and our industry isn't as strong as it was before also on the processing side, when we don't have investment and that there are some products that won't be made in Canada and will have to be imported over and above what's been allowed".

Canada also introduced tariffs on US yogurt, ketchup and soup products.

"WCIT is encouraged that the administration has struck a deal with Canada and Mexico to revise the NAFTA".

"Canada has always had strong economic ties with the United States and Mexico".

"Now again, we get hit".

In a statement to The Canadian Press, Chinese Embassy spokesman Yang Yundong calls the move "dishonest behaviour" that blatantly interferes with the sovereignty of other countries.

US exports of pork products to Mexico totaled $1.5 billion, according to NPPC.

"Canada and Mexico are the first and third largest export markets for US agriculture, accounting for more than a quarter of all USA agriculture exports", said Dan Kowalski, vice president of CoBank's Knowledge Exchange Division.

Washington dairy exports totaled $5.5 billion a year ago, with top markets in Mexico ($1.3 billion), Southeast Asia ($690 million), Canada ($636 million), China ($577 million) and South America ($291 million), according to a report by the U.S. Dairy Export Council. As of this week, Mexico's tariffs are still in place.

Pence also accused Beijing of showing its "aggression" when a Chinese navy vessel recently sailed in the dispute-ridden South China Sea near the USS Decatur destroyer, which according to USA officials had to make a quick detour to avoid collision.
