Nathan Eovaldi to start Game 3 in NY

The ultimate wisdom of that decision is in the process of being tested here in October.

Some three hours of baseball were played Saturday night between the moment the Boston Red Sox's starting pitcher departed the proceedings and the moment when Game 2 of the American League Division Series ended - three hours in which the outcome was still more or less malleable, and the Red Sox's hopes of stealing a win from the visiting New York Yankees went from unlikely to quite fathomable to dwindling to nil. Yet the Bombers captured a pivotal Game 2, stealing home field advantage in the process, courtesy of Sanchez, who rewarded the Yankees' unwavering faith in him with a breakout offensive performance.

"This is my first postseason start", Eovaldi said. "Whatever I need to do to help us do that, I'm fine with". He pitched for the Yankees in 2015 and '16 before injuring his elbow, which required Tommy John surgery for the second time. In Game 7, Ortiz crushed a two-run homer in the first inning off Kevin Brown, giving the Red Sox a 2-0 lead in a game they would never trail and eventually won 10-3. He fired six scoreless frames against Washington on June 26 and seven scoreless innings against the Mets on July 8, flashing the type of dominant raw stuff that convinced Boston to part with Triple-A All-Star Jalen Beeks.

Perhaps because the Sox stole Game 1 of the ALDS (yes, stole - the Yanks' inability to drive in RISP cost them the contest), manager Alex Cora figured, there'd be less pressure on Price to perform at Fenway. "He can even get away with mistakes. That's all you've got to do".

NY is built for Yankee Stadium, where it takes advantage of the short right-field porch and hit 144 of its record 267 home runs. They went to Fenway Park and split the first two games of the best-of-five series with the Boston Red Sox.

"I've got to tell you there's nothing like this season", admitted Sanchez.

Who follows Eovaldi in the late innings, if necessary, is anybody's best guess.

Martinez, who now works as a special assistant to Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, said last week on TBS' Major League Baseball postseason coverage that Severino pitched hurt during the second half of the regular season.

The Astros try to complete an ALDS sweep over Cleveland when Dallas Keuchel starts Game 3 at Progressive Field.

"We expect to go out there and win tomorrow and the next day", Red Sox reliever Matt Barnes said.

"I saw that he was laying off pitches that were just off, and he was able to hold up on check swings, and it just seemed like he was locked in at the plate", Yankees outfielder Aaron Hicks said. You want to give them a shot to win the game.

Joe Kelly doused the Price flames with 2.1 innings of one-hit relief and Ryan Brasier didn't allow a hit in his one inning on the mound.

For all the focus on big boppers, J.D. Martinez, Mookie Betts and Andrew Benintendi for Boston, and Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Gary Sanchez for NY, relievers have reigned in an error when starting pitchers often are shown the exit before they have a chance to stumble too much.

Let's get back to David Price. Red Sox relievers have given up five in 11 innings. I'm looking forward to getting back out there and getting another opportunity...
