Canada now world’s largest legal marijuana marketplace

With the legalization of recreational cannabis in Canada just hours away, the federal government is expected to announce it will pardon people with past convictions for cannabis possession as the new law takes effect.

Talks over legalising marijuana in Canada have been going on for a while now with the Senate voting 52-29 in favour of legalisation.

Canada has had legal medical marijuana since 2001, and amid excitement over the arrival of legal recreational pot, many in the industry spent the last days of prohibition on tasks familiar to any retail business - completing displays, holding mock openings and training employees to use sales-tracking software.

Every order from B.C. Cannabis Stores' online store will come with a $10 shipping fee.

Most adult Canadians are now able to buy and use recreational cannabis legally and grow it at home, but how and where depends where they live.

Speaking on Parliament Hill, Trudeau says the government has worked for years to prepare for a legalized regime, adding the current approach to cannabis is not protecting young people or communities from organized crime.

"You know, I'm living my dream".

Each province has its own rules and regulations about how it will be distributed, enforced and how much you can possess.

"I started working in this industry eight and a half years ago when there were 15 countries that had legal access to medical cannabis, today there are 35", Kennedy said.

He has also said that his late brother Michel was facing marijuana possession charges for a "tiny amount" of pot before his death in an avalanche in 1998, and that this influenced his decision to propose legalizing cannabis.

"Now that our neighbor to the north is opening its legal cannabis market, the longer we delay, the longer we miss out on potentially significant economic opportunities for OR and other states across the country", Democratic Sen.

"There's no money in the product itself", she said.

Canada needs to "take a deep breath" as USA states such as Colorado and California did not have a seamless system at the outset either, said Cam Battley, chief corporate officer for licensed producer Aurora Cannabis.
