Mega Millions jackpot jumps to $868M; no winners in Tuesday's drawing

No winning lottery tickets were sold for Tuesday's draw, Mega Millions officials said.

Numbers have been drawn for the $667 million Mega Millions drawing.

People have until 9 purchase tickets for the 10 p.m. drawing.

If you've won over $600, download a claim form from the California Lottery and deliver it to any lottery district office or mail it to 730 N. 10th St., Sacramento, CA 95811. California is just one of three states to exempt state income tax on lottery winnings.

Three friends in Baltimore County who identified themselves publicly only as "The Three Amigos", landed over $218 million in 2012 when they shared a then-record Mega Millions jackpot of $656 million with winners in IL and Kansas. Lottery officials also recommend the victor contact an attorney or financial advisory to help with the process.

The immediate cash value of the Mega Millions prize, which winners can opt to take, is $494.5 million.

The jackpot has been growing since it was last won on July 24.

Mega Millions tickets cost $2 per play and there are a total of nine ways to win a prize, ranging from the jackpot down to $2.

Now, there's more than a billion dollars up for grabs between the Mega Millions and the Power Ball drawing.

The odds of winning a jackpot remain abysmal at 1 in 258.9 million for Mega Millions and 1 in 292.2 million for Powerball. North Dakotans are on the opposite end of the spectrum, spending about $44 per year on the lottery, or the lowest average figure among residents of all 50 states.
