SIMPSONVILLE, S.C. The number of billionaires in SC may have doubled overnight - at least before taxes - after a lottery ticket sold in the state won the $1.537 billion Mega Millions lottery jackpot.

A Simpsonville KC Mart sold the sole winning ticket for the US$1.5 billion Mega Millions jackpot, the biggest lottery payout in United States history, lottery officials said today.

Lottery officials said the state will get $80 million in taxes. That's okay. There's always the Powerball, scheduled to be drawn Wednesday night.

Actually, they're wrong every time. The state encourages players to sign their tickets upon purchase, but that may prove problematic if anonymity is desired by the victor or winners.

SC is one of just a handful of states that allows lottery jackpot winners to remain anonymous. The estimate doesn't sound so wrong if you frame it as being off by about 4 percent.

According to the Louisiana Lottery website, two winning tickets were bought in Baton Rouge.

Peggy Stover, a marketing professor at the University of Iowa's business college, said it's invaluable to trumpet something as being the first or the best. "I enjoyed it the first time I went and would love to go back".

"The final total was less than the $1.6 billion estimate because estimates are based on historical patterns of jackpot rolls, but there were few precedents for a jackpot this size", said Kansas Lottery Executive Director Terry Presta.

Patel said lottery ticket sales were brisk leading up to Tuesday and he has no idea who bought the victor. "Just think how much free publicity they got".

But Cooper described reaction to the winning ticket being sold in SC with a word not found in the dictionary.

Any outrage that a prize advertised as the world's largest was actually one spot down the list? That still stands as the all-time highest lottery jackpot ever in the U.S.

"They didn't believe me until they saw the ticket", she said.
