The 22-year-old won the penalty that Paul Pogba converted at the second attempt in the 27th minute before lashing home what proved the victor just after half-time.

For large parts of this encounter at Old Trafford, United were unrecognisable from the team that sat deep and effectively surrendered to Juventus in one of the most emphatic 1-0 defeats in living memory on Tuesday.

It was a courageous decision, but one that ultimately paid off. José Mourinho dropped Romelu Lukaku and Manchester United produced their best performance of the season to see off a wasteful Everton side.

Pogba has now missed two of his five penalties for United so far this season. The Red Devils looked comfortable in a 2-0 lead thanks to Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial.

"For me it looks like diving and my player told me he touched the ball", said Silva in his post match TV interview with Sky Sports. And he was well aware of the weapons United possess and in particular former Blues striker Romelu Lukaku, despite him being goalless in his last six PL outings.

"We came here to win the match, we played well and until that moment, the penalty, they had one chance, we had one chance".

Looking to build upon the recent upturn in results and with a fully fit squad to choose from, Marco Silva appeared to be in a much better situation but was no doubt wary of any degree of complacency setting in with his Everton squad.

The defeat snaps Everton's three-game winning streak and they will feel both aggrieved at yet more bad refereeing that has cost them on the road the season while also ruing some missed opportunities of their own.

On 25 minutes, Evertonian pre-game fears were realised as John Moss awarded United a penalty after Martial when down theatrically under a challenge from Gana Gueye.

Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial netted a goal apiece in either halves to gift the Red Devils a much-needed victory.

Could not stop Gylfi Siggurdson's penalty but had a tidy game between the sticks, gathering long-shots and crosses comfortably. Television replays would confirm that the Senegal midfielder got a toe on the ball before the Frenchman flopped to the turf but Moss was conned into giving the spot kick. Pogba was then stripped of his role as vice-captain. I am happy with boys who are improving.
