The onetime truck driver, who frequently posted anti-Semitic material online and was described by neighbours as a loner, was charged with 29 federal felony counts and could face the death penalty if convicted.

Dr Jeff Cohen, was interviewed by Channel 4 News about his experience of meeting the man who killed 11 people at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh on Saturday, where he himself is a parishioner.

Bowers, of Baldwin, Pennsylvania, is said to have shot 11 worshippers dead at the Tree of Life Synagogue Saturday while screaming vile anti-Jewish slurs.

"[The vigil] shows we're not going to let hate drive us apart", Murphy said.

"They didn't do that with Bernie Sanders when he had - they didn't do that with the Democrats when other people came at - they didn't do that with President Obama with the church, the terrible situation with the church".

Ignoring the mayor's pleas, the president intends to travel to Pittsburgh on Tuesday with his wife Melania - and his daughter and son-in-law, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, who are practising Orthodox Jews.

Mayor Bill Peduto was among those officials, saying his sole focus would be on the funerals for the victims of the shooting and supporting their families.

The Republican president said he would visit hospitalized police officers and other people wounded in the shooting.

They also accused him of making some groups unsafe: "Our Jewish community is not the only group you have targeted".

Trump said late Monday he was looking forward to the visit.

But after the shooting, the president told the Murphysboro, Illinois, audience this: "If you don't mind, I'm going to tone it down just a bit".

"Why did things fall into place for me?" he asked. Critics charge that Trump's rhetoric inspired the anti-Semite to buy the AR-15 and kill as many Jews as he could. I can't sit by and watch my people get slaughtered.

Peduto, a Democrat, said on Monday Trump should hold off on his visit until after the 11 victims' funerals have been held, as the city does not have enough public safety personnel to cover both the funeral services and a presidential visit at the same time.

"All of America is in mourning over the mass murder of Jewish Americans at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh".

The Trump administration has rejected the notion he has encouraged white nationalists and neo-Nazis who have embraced him.
