S chief Maulana Samiul Haq stabbed to death in Rawalpindi

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) condemned the killing of Maulana Samiul Haq and said that serious action would be taken against the killers. He said that Haq's services would always be remembered.

In 1980s after his father's death, Maulana Sami stepped into politics.

His nephew, Luqmanul Haq told Geo News that the funeral of the senior religious scholar, who once held the post of a senator as well, was scheduled to be held at 3 PM, later today (Saturday), in the Garrison Ground his hometown. The prime minister's aide on political affairs, Naeemul Haq, said the religious scholar's martyrdom was a huge tragedy. He was the member of the Senate of Pakistan from 1985 to 1991 and again from 1991 to 1997.

As leader and administrator of Darul Uloom Haqqania University, Haq is credited with producing thousands of future adherents for the Taliban.

A spokesman for the military condemned the "assassination" and expressed "grief and condolences" to his family. In a statement, the governor said the assassination of Maulana Samiul Haq was a sad and highly condemnable incident. The prime minister has sought a report and directed that an investigation be carried out immediately to trace those responsible.

Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari said the brutal murder of Maulana Samiul Haq was "utterly condemnable".

He recalled that Maulana Samiul Haq was one of the few clerics who had openly supported the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government in running polio eradication campaign.
